Filling Out the Cal Grant Application

6 ways to make the most of your summer internshipStudents and families who want to go to college or university in the state of California have their pick of prestigious schools – Stanford University, University of California at Los Angeles, and the California Institute of Technology, among many other choices. The Cal Grant, a financial aid program offered by the California Student Aid Commission, makes part of the higher education challenge easier by giving eligible students money to attend the school of their choice.

What Is the Cal Grant?

The Cal Grant focuses on students and their families who can demonstrate financial need to attend an accredited Californian college or university. The grant offers financial aid awards to undergraduate students, vocational training students, and those pursuing teaching and education certifications.

Cal Grants are the largest source of state-sponsored financial aid in California, having provided funding for more than 2.3 million people since its inception.

The California Student Aid Commission offers three types of Cal Grants – A, B, and C. They are broken out as follows:

How Do I Fill Out the Cal Grant Application?

Applying for Cal Grant funds involves two forms: the FAFSA and a certified GPA form. The California Student Aid Commission will use your FAFSA to determine your level of financial need (based on family income and assets), while your certified GPA form will be a factor in your placement in either Cal Grant A or Cal Grant B.

Applicants will also have to prove that they are residents of California, having lived in the state for 12 months prior to their Cal Grant application. Students must also have graduated from a high school in California.

Students who are not citizens of the United States cannot use the FAFSA, but they are still eligible to receive Cal Grant funds with the California Dream Act Application.

Applications for the Cal Grant can be sent electronically, but they can also be mailed to the California Student Aid Commission. Once an application has been received, you can go to the website to track its progress and immediately respond to any requests for additional information.
