Maryland Scholarships

maryland studentOver the past few years, the rising costs of college tuition have left many Americans simply unable to afford a quality higher education. In order to address this issue, the government, along with educational institutions and private organizations award millions of dollars in financial aid each year, including grants and scholarships, work-study and student loans. Scholarships are the preferred type of financial aid for all college applicants, as they do not have to be paid back to anyone. In other words, a scholarship is a “gift” of money that students can use to pay for college tuition, books and study materials and other expenses.

What are Maryland Scholarships?

Maryland scholarships are awarded to residents of the state of Maryland who fulfill certain conditions and are enrolled at a public or private college or university. These scholarships are awarded based on a student’s proposed area of study, academic performance, athletic skills and other talents and also financial need.

Scholarship awards may cover all-or a portion of-the cost of tuition and living expenses. In order to maintain their scholarship status, students are required to meet certain conditions. While specific requirements vary with each scholarship, generally students are required to maintain good academic standing. This means meeting the minimum required attendance and maintaining a certain GPA.

Most scholarships do not require separate applications and a student’s college application is automatically considered for the available scholarships. However, it is advisable to check with the college admissions office and financial services about the application procedures for Maryland state scholarships.
