Student Loans for IUPUI Students
About Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, also known by the almost-as-tongue-twisting acronym IUPUI, is a public university formed in 1969 by a partnership between Indiana University and Purdue University. IU is the managing partner of the institution, meaning they deal with all of the administrative junk that keeps the school running smoothly. The university has just fewer than 30,000 undergraduates, and was ranked as the #5 up-and-coming national university in 2011. In addition to that distinction, IUPUI boasts the first School of Informatics in the country; founded in 2005, the school focuses on the study of the science of information and the practice of information processing. It’s certainly a great school: affording is often the only barrier between a prospective student and an IUPUI degree. While on IUPUI financial aid, you want to make sure you save as much as possible. As such, it’s important to construct a budget that accounts for a reasonable amount of personal expenses, but that doesn’t allow you to run wild with personal spending. Trips to the Rathskeller and the Red Eye Café are going to happen, and you don’t want them to catch your budget by surprise: build some room in for incidentals, but don’t let yourself go crazy with spending.
Just like all public universities, IUPUI requires the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) from students who are applying for financial aid. That’s it! Seriously. To receive IUPUI financial aid, simply file the FAFSA. Before doing so, however, it might be prudent to ask about any ‘free money’ awards you might be eligible for; it’s also a good idea to ask if you might have to borrow money to afford attending IUPUI.
Grants, scholarships, work-study programs, and student loans are the main ingredients of any IUPUI financial aid package. That’s pretty standard fare, and any student who is deemed to have financial aid will see some sort of aid package with a mix of these ingredients. For many, these forms of aid will be enough, but for some students, the federal loans included in their aid package just aren’t enough to help them cover costs. For these students, private student loans can be a good option to cover the tuition gap.
