A private, Roman Catholic university located in Queens, St Johns University is home to 16,000 undergraduate students, a smattering of graduate students, and six different colleges. Listed as a 1st tier school and a ‘Best Northeastern College,’ St Johns University has a College of Arts and Sciences, a School of Education, a School of Business, a College of Pharmacy, and a School of Law. In addition to its campus in Queens, St Johns University has presences in Manhattan and Staten Island, as well as full campuses abroad in Rome and Paris.
Assuming you’re not in the 4% of students at St Johns who aren’t receiving St Johns financial aid, you should adhere to one pretty simple principle: manage your personal spending while at college. That sounds simple, right Just to clarify, that means not spending money on clothes, shoes, or meals out on a regular basis. The cost of living in the city is super high too, and you want to make sure your cash lasts while having to deal with such an urban environment, so keep a really tight eye on it. It’s okay to head over to the Fame Diner or Vincenzo’s every now and again, just don’t go there so often that they know you by name.
While St Johns is private, the only form you need to provide the St Johns University financial aid office with in order to be considered for financial aid is the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This form is relatively easy to fill out - it’s not quite as bad as pulling teeth, and it’s definitely better than the CSS/PROFILE - so be a little relieved at that. If you have any broad questions about the FAFSA, check out our resource center for more info, but if you have any super specific questions, either about the form or about institutional aid policies, give your aid counselor a call or email, and he or she will/should happily help you out. All you need to do is file the FAFSA, though - once it’s in the mail, you’ll hear back, hopefully with an aid package, with your next tuition bill.
There are four main things that are given out in financial aid packages from any college or university, and those are federal or institutional student loans, federal or institutional grants/scholarships, otherwise known as ‘free money’ awards, as well as work-study programs. Simple as that, You’ll get some kind of aid cocktail with these ingredients depending on the financial need that you demonstrate. Now, for some students, their St Johns financial aid packages are good but not great, and there’s still a financial gap left between what they can afford to pay and the money they’ve been given in aid. If you find yourself in this spot and don’t have any additional resources to cover college costs, consider a private student loan. We can help you do your research about private loans, from finding lenders to comparing the smallest, finest-print details about any given loan to another, all until you find a loan that suits you best. If you do find one that works for you, you can apply for it directly, and be able to cover that next tuition bill from St Johns.
