The UC system has a lot to brag about, from UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD and UCI. If you’re looking for a rigorous, academically elite education with an emphasis on research, UCI fits that bill nicely. One of the top public research universities in the country, UCI is considered a Public Ivy, and just as importantly, it was listed at #16 on a list of “The 100 Happiest Colleges” (by The Daily Beast). Plus, it’s in Southern California;maybe not having to pack winter clothes could convince you to go to UCI over one of those Northeastern schools.

Budgeting and UCI Financial Aid

If you’re receiving UCI financial aid, the last thing you want to do is overrun your budget and burn into your aid money: it’s super important to construct and stick to a responsible budget for your time at UCI. You don’t want to find yourself short on cash in the middle of a semester because you didn’t plan for personal expenses, so just be responsible and stick to your budget. Going out to eat off-campus at Z Pizza or grabbing some late-night food at In-N-Out is fine, just keep track of your cash and don’t do it all the time. If you’re careful with your cash, you’ll be fine, no sweat.

Applying for UCI Financial Aid

UCI is a public university, so the only form you need to submit to receive UCI financial aid is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). While the FAFSA has some notoriety for being a gross financial aid form, it’s really not all that bad. For in-state students, you’ll also have to fill out a form confirming that you are a legitimate in-state resident to be eligible for Cal Grants and the in-state student subsidy provided by the UC system. Apart from that, the only other thing you should do when applying for UCI financial aid is to have a chat with your aid counselor. Ask him or her about any grants or scholarships you could possibly receive, and also ask if you may need to take out loans to cover the cost of attending UCI.

UCI Financial Aid Packages

UCI financial aid packages will contain a mix of the four common forms of financial aid: work-study plans, scholarships, grants, and student loans. Students who live in California will receive a significant subsidy on their general tuition costs, and will also most likely be eligible to receive a Cal Grant for staying in-state. Apart from these two factors, financial aid packages from UCI are pretty typical. For many students, they’re perfectly sufficient, though a decent number of students take out federal student loans to help cover the cost of attendance.
