UNH Financial Aid

Located in the small town of Dover, New Hampshire (14,600 pop.), UNH's flagship school offers a premier education to about 12,200 undergraduate students in a traditional New England setting. Founded in 1866, the school's somewhat coastal location and sea-grant status has encouraged a great deal of emphasis on its marine biology and oceanography programs; in fact, UNH operates the Shoals Marine Lab, located on the Isle of Shoals off the coast of Portsmouth, jointly with Cornell University. Hockey is big at UNH, as it is at most schools in northern New England, with the UNH Wildcats competing against UMaine, UMass, UVM, and other regional and national powerhouses in the Hockey East conference. All told, UNH is a pretty great place.

If you're receiving UNH financial aid, which about 3/4ths of students at UNH do, then you absolutely, must, without exception take care about saving your money. The occasional trip into Portsmouth with friends is acceptable, as long as you don't break the bank. Buying food and drinks at hockey games will happen too, and that's okay as long as you leave room in your budget for it.

Applying for UNH Financial Aid

The only form UNH requires applicants for financial aid to submit is the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. That may sound ugly or intimidating, but the form really isn't all that bad. The UNH financial aid office will be happy to help you with any questions you might have about either your package or the application process; in that vein, it might be a good idea to ask them about their ‘free money' aid awards and how to get them a dollar not borrowed is a dollar saved. Once you file your FAFSA, though, you're good: nothing more needs to be done.

Every financial aid package will include some mix of grants, loans, scholarships, and work-study programs, and this is what you'll see from UNH. Most students will be satisfied with their UNH financial aid packages, and about 63% will accept the federal student loans included therein.
